American Eagle Syntech ammunition

Not too long ago Federal Cartridge released a strange looking new ammunition line under their American Eagle brand name.

They called it SYNTECH and it looked like lipstick.

While the word polymer is not used, it is a nice synthetic coating over the lead core

The initial caliber offerings  are 9MM Parabellum, 40 Smith and Wesson and 45 ACP.

These three calibers were offered in their standard weights and bullet profile. Federal sent me a supply of each of these initial offerings however today we are going to address the 230 grain 45 ACP

As expected some of the claims are no leading, easier cleanup and better velocity due to less friction. The less friction claim also adds that this will keep the firearm cooler.

The manufacturer claims a muzzle velocity of 830 FPS. This is about the standard for a round that is loaded to SAAMI pressure limits.

Well we test fired the ammunition in a variety of firearms. A LabRadar unit. These new Dopler Radar chronographs are faster to set up and easier to record data from.

All firearms were shot in 5 round strings. We went once around the group of firearms and then did a second string from each firearm. The data from the two strings was averaged.

We started with the shortest barrel on hand, an older 2 3/8″ Smith and Wesson Model 25 Behlert conversion.

The snubby revolver turned in an average MV of 711 FPS. I was not shocked by this combining the short barrel with the barrel/cylinder gap of a revolver.

OK moving on to semi autos. I had a couple of short autos with me, a Smith and Wesson 4516 along with an HK USP CT. These two pistols turned in 772 FPS and 758 FPS respectively. Since the HK was set up for a can, I decided to see what kind of numbers it would turn in. With a Osprey 45 suppressor in place, the USP 45 CT firing Syntech ammunition hit 806 FPS, a velocity gain of 6% . . . Interesting

We happened to have a full size HK USP Tactical on hand so it was also thrown into the mix.

The larger pistol turned in 746 FPS and 816 FPS without and with the suppressor. Slightly slower numbers proving once again that barrel length is not the only thing that affects muzzle velocity

The final pistol that we had on hand that afternoon was a Kimber Pro Carry. This is just a run of the mill 4″ 1911, not one of Kimber’s Custom Shop guns. The Kimber turned in 779 FPS.

If we had run the Synthec through a 5″ auto loader I am sure it would have reached the advertised velocity. However, these days most folks carry the shorter firearms

Every firearm provided good groups that were to point of aim. As the advertising told us, clean up was much faster than if we had been shooting traditional lead projectiles.

I think that they have a winner here as long as they can keep the pricing down and continue adding new offerings to the line up

Happy Birthday America

During your BBQs and Family gatherings today try to take a moment and read the “Declaration of Independence”

Include your Children and even the neighbor’s kids if they happen to be at your house for the festivities.

I would bet money that none of the kids that attend public school have ever heard this document read aloud.

There is only a small handful of Documents in the World that have been written with the passion and love that comes across in the “Declaration of Independence” or “Constitution of the United States of America”

Heart-Touching-4th-Of-July-Images

These are things that our children MUST learn about lest our Future Leaders repeat the same mistakes that England made over 242 years ago.

There is much talk in modern days that we should become more progressive and abolish things like the Second Amendment to the Constitution as being unnecessary. Just remember that without personal firearms ownership, we would not be Celebrating Independence on this day.

So enjoy the “Bombs Bursting in Air” tonight after the sun goes down, just NEVER forget how we got here and what it means to be AMERICAN

GOD Bless the USA

EAA Witness Elite Match

OK, that is one long name, and it implies the pistol is going to be a sweet shooter. Well I can tell you the Witness Elite Match delivers.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAEAA’s line of Elite pistols has been out for several years and I will go over the evolution of the product to it’s current day configuration.

Above is a 45ACP Witness Elite Match as they came out originally. The pistols sported a two tone finish with wide cocking serrations on the front and rear of the slide, rubber grip panels and a SAO trigger system. The rear sight is what the folks at EAA refer to as a Super Sight. It is very similar to the Bomar rear sight. The frame has a long sweeping beaver tail and takes a 10 round magazine that is compatible with most if not all of the 45 ACP CZ clones

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe Elite Match has been availble in 9MM Parabellum, 40 Smith and Wesson, 38 Super, 10MM Auto and 45ACP.

The firearms are very reasonable priced based on their features and performance.

The first change that EAA made was to change the rear sight. While still adjustable, I just think the lines of the original Super Sight look better.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe next change that EAA implemented was a switch over to the frame with the equipment rail. You will also note that the rear sight is now a fixed sight and the grips are maed from a polymer. This next image is provided courtesy of the EAA website

witness-elite-match_fWhile the first style is my favorite, that is somewhat of a cosmetic thing. All three turned in similar accuracy results and there were no reliability problems in the bunch

CZ 97 family of autoloaders

There are so many 45 caliber pistols and rifles to talk about in the market place. I have had the opportunity to use a CZ Model 97 BD. The CZ 97 was originally introduced in 1997. This pistol sports the same lines that we have come to know in the CZ 75 series of pistols.

The CZ 97 BD variant give us a manual decocking lever for the Traditional DA/SA action that lowers the hammer to a half cock position

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI love to look of the full dust cover, especially ones that do not have equipment rails on them. The extra weight out front makes the 45ACP feel even tamer than is normally attributed to the CZ design

For the range, forward cocking serrations are very nice. This pistol has fixed Tritium sights that sit relatively high in the rear. I would have preferred a lower profile adjustable sight. However this is intended as a duty/carry gun and not a target pistol. Since it is a duty/defensive firearm the CZ 97 BD is finished in a durable black polycoat.

So far the big bore auto loader has been accurate and reliable with every brand of factory hardball or hollow point that I have fed it. I think I line the Hornady 230 XTP +P the best

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I love the look of wood grips but these rubber panels are more practical on a duty firearm. They provide a non-slip grip even under adverse conditions. Currently the CZ 97 BD is shipping with aluminium grips

I know that beaver tails are controversial these days. I like them, however this one is longer than is necessary for a duty/defensive pistol.

The magazine capacity is 10 +1 in the chamber. The 10 round magazine allows for a nice slim grip that is agreeable even to shooters with smaller hands.

HK Flashback. 50th Anniversary USP compact

I think it was back in 2000 when Heckler and Koch celebrated their 50th anniversary.

For the occasion HK produced a special variation of the USPc chambered in 45ACP. The slide was finished in a very high polish blue. There was  “50th Anniversary/One of 1000” on the top of the slide while on the left side of the slide there is a gold and silver inlaid “HK” logo.

hk 50th big

The pistol shipped in a fitted Oak presentation case that held an extra magazine and commemorative coin. As you can see the magazine in the pistol has the finger rest base pad while the spare magazine is wearing the flush fit base plate

Here is the reverse side of the supplied coin

hk coin factory

1000 of these Heckler and Koch USPc Comemerative pistols were manufactured for World Wide distribution. I have no idea how many were sent to the United States, but I doubt it was the entire production

While this Commemerative is a fully functional USP compact, the example in the photographs remains unfired since leaving the factory. I am sure that this USP compact will perform just as well as it’s non-commemorative brethren
